A while ago I started watching this series on a BritBox (where it's known as The Marlow Murder Club). I've listened to all the books in the series so far in audio format though and it turns out the actresses chosen to play the roles on TV are good, but they aren't the voices that narrator Nicolette McKenzie chose to do. I mean not surprising but still they were different enough that I spent most of the TV watching time not 100% sure who was who.
Anyway, this is one of those slightly dotty, vaguely eccentric British mystery series, this time inhabited mostly by a female cast of characters - Judith, Suzie and Becks - characters straight out of classic English village life, the local crossword puzzle setter, dog walker and the vicar's wife, all of whom met up in book one of the series, and now solve murders with the help of DI Malik, despite opposition from other quarters of the local police service.
In this outing, as well as working out who is killing famous people about town, there's the added complication of the daughter of the now dead husband of Judith Potts - a Greek man with a a questionable reputation, who died in questionable circumstances, which is daughter is quite convinced is down to Judith. Who was cleared at the time, but there's some new evidence, and it turns out a bit of stuff she's been keeping very much to herself. Because there's quite a bit to Judith's backstory here, it probably would be best to have started a little earlier in the series if you really want to know what's been going on in Judith's life.
So nicely twisty, crowded with bodies and a nice twist on the "grand old house / eccentric aristocracy theme" alongside a detection system that relies pretty heavily on the busybody style, these are easy audio listening, partly because the narrator is good, partly because they aren't ever going to really stretch the brain too much.
Not sure if I'll ever get back to the TV series though - the audio books are filling in my need for a bit of light amusing distraction quite nicely.
